Glasgow is a city famed for it’s bustling food and drink scene, a fact that has been noticed by Hollywood A-listers, rock ‘n’ roll legends and royalty down through the decades.
We take a delve into the archives for a brief history of some of Glasgow’s best known restaurants, past and present, that have been visited by famous faces through the years.
5. Kelly Macdonald - The Buttery
The Buttery, or Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery as of 2007, is believed to be Glasgow’s oldest culinary institution, established in 1870 - over 150 years ago. Actress Kelly MacDonald told the New York Times about her favourite local food and drink: “I love Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery, one of the oldest restaurants in Glasgow, with dark-wood paneling and tartan upholstery. The menu has all kinds of locally sourced fish like sea trout, sea bream, seared scallops. They do an amazing sole meunière.”
6. Beyoncé - Hanoi Bike Shop
Hanoi Bike Shop has been bringing the spirit of Vietnam to Glasgow's West End from their premises on Ruthven Lane for many years. Pop megastar Beyoncé visited the restaurant back in 2014.
7. Will Ferrell - The Spanish Butcher
The Spanish Butcher opened their doors on Miller Street in Glasgow city centre back in 2016 and have been serving some of the finest grades of Galician beef and freshest of seafood in their chic, modern New York loft style interiors. Actor Will Ferrell visited the restaurant back in October 2019 where he ordered a 1.1kg porterhouse steak, a 900 gram chateaubriand and two side portions of manchego mac and cheese.
8. Billy Connolly - Koh-I-Noor
Koh-I-Noor was Glasgow's oldest Indian restaurant which had been serving hungry Glaswegians Indian dishes since 1964 when they opened their first restaurant on Gibson Street. The restaurant was a favourite of Billy Connolly's with him being pictured here in the restaurant in 2002 restaurant with owner Russel Tahir.
