Building work on Carluke brickworks site is halted
Persimmon Homes successfully applied to South Lanarkshire Council for planning permission for 117 new homes earlier this year.
Work on the site, now known as Mayfield Manor, began shortly afterwards.

One resident, who asked not to be named, was surprised at the sudden speed of the site closure.
He said: “It seems that the site was almost evacuated overnight. It seemed very strange to me because it was so quick.
“All the heavy machinery was taken away and the only thing that has been left is two containers.

The developer submitted plans for the site in February with the green light being given by councillors at the SLC Planning Committee meeting in June. The 117 new homes earmarked for the site are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
Persimmon Homes West Scotland’s managing director, Doug Law, attempted to calm any fears.
He said: “I can confirm that we have temporarily stopped work on our Mayfield Manor site while we wait for road construction consent and building warrant.

The housing development brought to an end the long history of brickmaking in Carluke and wiped away any faint hopes that locals may have had that a new brickworks would be resurrected when the economic picture looked a tad rosier.
The brickworks, which closed its doors for the last time in October 2011, was quickly dismantled in 2012 following safety concerns.
