Landfill tax fund may pay for park upgrade
Friends of Queen’s Park community group has applied to Waste Recycling Environment Ltd (WREN) for around £44,000 to spruce up the gates at the Pollokshaws Road end of the park.
The makeover includes creating new gates where the railings are at Balvicar Drive.

The application is backed by Glasgow City Council, but Tony Halifax of Friends of Queen’s Park is still crossing his fingers, saying: “We’re cautiously hopeful but we won’t hear if our bid has been accepted until July.”
Initial consultation mooted the idea of spreading the equipment throughout the park whereby fitness fans could enjoy more of the parkscape as they trained.
However, that idea was discarded so as not to disturb some of the more restful and contemplative areas of the park. Instead, it is invisaged that an outdoor gym could be incorporated just inside the proposed gates at Balvicar Drive where there already is a makeshift swing.

Mr Halifax said: “We understand there is a pair of gates somewhere in the council stores and, if possible, we would propose to restore them for use at Balvicar Drive.”
