Clydesdale Lyons roar at Tug of War Championships
Thankerton tugger John Lyon and his Quothquan namesakes Duncan, Alexander and Robert Lyon showed their teeth when winning gold medals at the top tournament earlier this spring.
“We were really under the cosh but showed great mettle to win in the 680kg class,” said John (47), who has now won an astonishing total of eight world tug of war titles .

Hide Ad“We lost the first end in both the semi-final and final but came back strongly each time.”
After beating England in the semi-final, the Scots – also represented by Tom Nelson, Colin Montgomery, Graham Hendry and Rhys Anderson – started the final as underdogs against the host country Ireland, whose total pack weight of 678kg was 17kg heavier overall.
