Kafui clinches first Bearsden tennis title
A large turnout of members had a feast of outstanding matches played in glorious sunshine.
And this year there was a new name on the men’s singles trophy when 17-year old Kafui Akpo-Young took the title with a 6-1 6-2 win over Adam Sidiki who also reached the final for the first time.

Hide AdThe ladies’ champion is Emma Wright who defeated the holder Karen Christie in the closest of matches, winning 6-4 1-6 6-4 to take title for the seventh time, her first win being in 2005.
The men’s doubles final featured the father and son team Philip and Scott Waterfield who were challenged all the way by juniors Fraser Edwards and Scott Curran but eventually clinched the trophy 6-3 6-1.
And in the ladies’ doubles Joanne Quirk and Emma Wright made it a hat-trick taking the title for the third consecutive year with a 7-6 (3) 6-1 win over Ashley Donnelly and Karen Christie.
The mixed doubles final was a repeat of last year’s final with Philip Waterfield playing with Karen Christie against his son Scott, partnered by 16-year-old Rachel Taylor.

Hide AdAfter the closest of matches Philip and Karen just managed to scrape home to win the title for the second consecutive year, with a 7-5 6-4 win.
In the junior championships Luke Turnbull won both the boys’ 14 and under and 16 and under events with wins over Scott Waterfield 6-3 6-3 and Jack Deveney 2-4 4-1 (12-10).
But Jack was the winner of the 12 & under event with a 4-0 4-0 win over Kyle McKay. The girls 16 & under winner was Rachel Taylor who defeated her sister Lucy with a 6-0 6-1 win, but Lucy was victorious in the 14 & under event winning 5-4 4-2 against Carla Trainer.
And Rachel picked up another trophy winning the girls under 12 event 6-0 6-1 against Iona Cadger.

Hide AdMini tennis 10 & under (Green) champion was Craig Christie, overall winner in a round robin.
The 9 & under (Orange) title went to Michael Mazoyer who beat Andrew Caldecott 7-5, 9-7 in a close final.
And under 8 champion (Red) was James Alexander with Grace Cameron runner-up.
Although the summer league season is now nearing a close, members of the club are eagerly looking forward to playing in the Drumchapel Inter Club Tournament at the end of October.
